Cougar Hoops

Saturday evening Brian and I took the kids to their first basketball game.  Our favorite team, the Cougars, were playing University of Southern Miss at the Hof.  The kids had an awesome time!  Daniel was really into watching all of the constant action on the court, and the girls tried really hard to get their dancing on the jumbo screen. We tried to explain basketball to them while I was trying to remember the rules myself.  But it didn't take long for them to follow it well enough to cheer for the team at the right times.

Brian and I both couldn't believe how much fun we had as a family.  The kids were so wonderful and seemed to really enjoy the game.  There was nonstop action on the court, even during a time out.  At the half (do you call it that in Basektball?), the girls' Cougar Softball team came out and demonstrated their pitches.  Ashley loved that!  To top off the night, attending the game was very inexpensive for all five of us in general admission.

Like any exciting game, it came down to the very last seconds.  Even when the buzzer sounded we didn't know who won - the refs had to decide if the opposing team's  basket before the final buzzer.  And to our dismay, it was ruled good, so the Coogs lost by 2 points.  It was very sad after their lead through most of the game.  Daniel took it very hard.  Take a look at this picture - it was taken at the end, just before leaving the seats.  He was so upset, he wouldn't smile or look at the camera.  Poor boy.  He is a HUGE fan and really gets into it.

After the game ended, we headed to a neighborhood pizzeria by the house for dinner.  Poor Birdie almost fell asleep in the car, but we worked diligently to keep her awake.  Then, at dinner, poor Daniel put his head down on the table and went to sleep.  We tried to wake him up for his favorite thing in the whole world - DESSERT!  But there was no rousing that sleepyhead.

It was an amazing family night!  We are really looking forward to the next basketball game or maybe trying out a baseball or softball game on campus this Spring.

So glad you found the basketball games. The action is so much closer and easier to get into than football that I'm not surprised that the kids loved it. Your dad and I used to go to the basketball games while he was still at UH. I liked those more than football - did I say that they are played inside as to outside in the heat or cold. : )
