Cakebread Wine Dinner

Friday night, Brian and I attended a Cakebread Winery Wine Dinner at Pappas Grill, a local steakhouse. It was a wonderful time, full of good food and great wine! We were joined by my parents, and David and Leah. We were started off with Hors d'Oeuvres and the 2006 Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc. The wine was wonderful and my favorite starters were the pork and crab wonton and the steak tartare. I could have eaten those all night.

Next, we were brought into the dining room, where the Master Sommelier discussed each wine before it was poured. For a second course we were served Roasted Bobwhite Quail with mission fig, charred onion and crispy trotters. It was paired with the 2006 Chardannay and the "Reserve" Chardonnay. As I'm not a big Chardonnay fan, it wasn't my favorite. Brian loved the quail and the wine.

For the maincourse, we were served Veal Prime Rib, Creamed Morels, arrowleaf spinach. Paired with 2005 Merlot and the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. I believe it was a consensus at our table that we preferred the Cab, but the Merlot was a close second. I wish I'd gotten a picture because I believe Brian actually licked his plate when he was done eating his Veal.

I do have to add that everytime the Sommelier got up to talk, our table had trouble keeping a straight face. You give us that much wine, then expect to talk to us seriously about grapes and aging? He seemed to have a good sense of humor about it because he came over to answer my dad's questions and had a good time at our table. Then a woman from another table came over to steal him away, and that is another story all together that I'm not posting on a blog. It was hysterical.

Everyone knows I'm not that big on dessert, but I almost licked my plate Friday night. They served a Warm Texas Peach, Vanilla Cheesecake, Blueberry Gastrique, Brown Sugar Crumble. Unbelievable. I loved it! Brian and I ate seconds from David and Leah who didn't finish theirs.

It was a great night. They only do these wine dinners every couple of months and the next one is already sold out. It was so wonderful. I highly recommend going to one if you have the opportunity.
